The Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace (CNDP) sincerely condoles the untimely demise of two of its eminent colleagues, who were at the forefront of struggles for peace and justice in the country.
Sunil Bhai of Samajwadi Jan Parishad passed away last month at the age of 56. He was a relentless fighter for the rights of the most vulnerable sections of Indian society and a consistent supporter of the anti-nuclear struggles in India. His warm presence and unflinching solidarity always gave CNDP’s efforts political and moral strength. His group was among the first to endorse the Indian People’s Charter on Nuclear Energy adopted at the National Convention last year in Ahmedabad, organised by the CNDP. Sunil bhai participated in CNDP’s national consultation on alternative energy in New Delhi and went to Rawatbhata as part of the fact-finding team when the reactor workers were exposed to Tritium leaks. Sunil bhai’s inspiration will continue to guide us in our coming battles.
Father Thomas Kocherry’s demise last week is a big shock to all of us. He was a prominent voice against eco-destructive and anti-people growth under neoliberalism and spearheaded the struggles of fisherfolk against such ‘development’ projects across the country. He unwaveringly supported the people’s struggle against nuclear power plant in Koodankulam and organised solidarity for it on behalf of christian organisations and fisherfolk.
We express our sincere condolences to their family members and friends.
