PRESS STATEMENT

We, on behalf of the Coalition for Nuclear Disarmament and Peace(CNDP), express our dismay at the inconclusive Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) this month.

Not only did the Review Conference fail to come up with a final statement with a demand from the Nuclear Weapons States to initiate concrete steps to negotiate a process of comprehensive nuclear disarmament at the earliest, we are also shocked at the manner in which the United States single-handedly blocked the collective demand for a Zone free of Weapons of Mass Destruction in the Middle East, something that would have ended the existence of nuclear weapons in the Israel and permanently ended any temptation on the part of the other countries of the region to acquire nuclear weapons.

In this the 70th year of the Hiroshima bombing, the world needs a renewed and urgent push for complete and comprehensive nuclear disarmament. The continued callousness and hypocrisy of the nuclear-armed nations in this regard is condemnable.

We stand in complete solidarity with international civil society and the large number of non-nuclear weapons states who have made urgent appeals to outlaw the nuclear weapons by induction of a nuclear ban treaty at the earliest.
